An SSD disk does not exist! On the search term “SSD disk” an “SSD hard disk”, Google searches remarkably often. This is striking because such a storage device does not exist at all. An SSD storage device does not have a disk, but memory chips on a printed circuit board to store data.
The confusion may be because the word disk from the name hard drive is considered a storage device. But the word disk comes from the rapidly turned magnetic disk on which the data is stored with a hard disk. In my opinion, you can never speak of an SSD drive with an SSD, because there is no disk at all in an SSD.
SSD drive as a term for SSHD?
Can be seen next to the word disk as a term for storage. You could also see the name as a term for an SSHD (Solid State Hybrid Drive). That is a storage device in which an SSD and a hard disk are combined in one housing. This can be ideal for a portable computer in which you still want a lot of, fast and affordable storage space. And where you only have room for one storage device. However, the popularity of an SSHD is rapidly declining. Most laptops have space for two storage devices. Prices of SSDs continue to fall, and the benefits of SSHDs are decreasing as a result.
SSD hard disk is an unclear term
In short, the name SSD hard disk is a vague term. It can be interpreted in different ways. It does not clearly state what kind of storage device it means. That is why you can better talk about SSD storage or just an SSD.
There are currently four types of storage devices for computers.
- Hard disk (HDD) »
- Solid State Hybrid Drive (SSHD) »
- Solid State Drive (SSD) »
- eMMC flash storage »
Hard disk open The hard disk is the oldest and cheapest form of data storage. Data is stored on a very fast rotating magnetic disk.
A reading and disk head rages a few millimetres above the surface. The small variations in magnetic convert the computer to 1’s and zeros.
SSD (Solid State Drive) A few years ago, a new type of storage device came on the market, the SSD. The data is not stored magnetically, but with electricity. Exactly in the same way as memory cards that go into a photo camera or smartphone.
Of course, the technology has improved a lot, and the storage of data on memory chips is much faster than on a rotating magnetic disk. The SSD has many advantages over a hard disk. As a result, it is rapidly increasing in popularity. This may also explain why the term SSD drive is used so much.
Advantages of an SSD storage device »
SSHD Based on these new memory chips, the SSHD and the eMMC memory was created. An SSHD combines the magnetic disk of a hard disk with the memory chips of an SSD. You could think of this as an SSD drive.
Solid State Hybrid Drive (SSHD) »
Looking at eMMC parts such as the memory controller have been removed, and cheaper memory chips are used to provide a small portable computer with a relatively fast storage device.
