What is a Hot Swap? With desktop computers, you see more and more Hot-Swap options. This allows you to easily add and remove an extra storage device on your system. You do not have to open the desktop housing for this. It is not even necessary to turn off the computer. When the computer is on, you can add or disconnect a computer part with Hot Swap.
Hot-Swap is a technique that makes it possible to disconnect computer components from the computer without having to switch off the computer. Of course, not all parts have the option of Hot Swap. It is not possible to remove a processor from the motherboard while it is on. The computer will shut down.
You will find Hot-Swap mainly with storage devices. Consider, for example, inserting a USB stick into a USB port. Not only USB supports Hot Swap but also FireWire, Thunderbolt and of course SATA. If you still have an old IDE hard drive? These are not Hot Swappable.
Interchangeable slide Medion desktop With desktops, you increasingly see a Hot Swap interchangeable slide placed in the housing. You can place a SATA storage device in this switch slide. Often a 3.5-inch model, but sometimes also smaller 2.5-inch models such as an SSD. It differs per turnout how you secure the storage device. With one model, you need four screws and a screwdriver. But there are also models where you can click the storage device.
Then slide the switch slide with storage device into the desktop. This is possible even when the computer is on. And, just like with USB, the computer will recognize a new storage device. Do you no longer need the storage device? Check if you are no longer writing data on the storage device. Then you can also take out the changeover slide when the computer is on.
What is the use of a Hot Swap?
In my opinion, there are three situations where a Hot Swap change slide is useful.
- Backup data easily
- Easily expand storage space
- Insert old hard disk from the previous desktop
Don’t have a NAS or other method to automatically backup critical data? Then a swappable change carriage may be an option to save this data periodically.
You place a new storage device with a large storage capacity in the switch slide and slide it into the desktop. Copy essential data for you on this backup storage device. Are you ready? Take out the change carriage and keep it well, preferably in a place other than your own home. For example, if a fire starts in your house, you will still have lost this information.
Easily expand storage space
Do you currently not have much more storage space to store data? And you also have no opportunity to free up space? Then you can quickly increase the storage capacity with an exchange slide. It is not necessary to open the computer case for the internal storage of a storage device.
To do this, place a storage device in the switch drawer and slide it into the desktop. You now have an additional storage device at your disposal to store data.
Insert the old hard disk during a hot-swap
Have you bought a new desktop with a swappable switch slide? Then you can easily place the storage device (hard drive) from your previous desktop in this switch. Please note that only SATA storage devices work. Old IDE storage devices do not fit in a Hot Swap changeover carriage.
